8/58 Row of 3 cottages and wash-house
- approximately 150 metres to west
of Penheale Manor
II*
Row of 3 estate workers cottages and wash-house directly to front. Early C20,
designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Captain N.R. Colville. Stone rubble with dressed
stone quoins. Slate roofs with deep overhanging eaves and hipped ends. Stone rubble
axial stacks with dressed quoins.
Plan: Row of 3 estate workers cottages, each of 2 room plan, heated by axial stacks.
The entrances are set back, each with two doors, one entering directly into the
principal room on front and the other into a service room
Exterior: Two storeys. Almost symmetrical 2:3:2 front elevation with 2 and 3-light
casements with glazing bars. The front wall of the central cottage is set back; the
roof continues unbroken across this recess forming especially deep eaves to the
central range. The central cottage has an entrance to right with granite lintel and
jambs, the two panelled doors set back. Two 3-light casements in centre and to right
with two 3-light casements flanking a central 2-light casement on first floor. The
cottages to right and left are mirror images; they have granite lintels and jambs to
the entrances to right and left with 4-light casement on ground floor and 2 and 3-
light casements on first.
On the rear elevation, the closely set first floor windows form a glazed band
directly below the overhanging eaves.
Directly to front of the cottages is a communal wash-house; stone rubble with
dressed quoins, slate roof with hipped ends and stone rubble and dressed stone
lateral stack. Single storey with panelled door in left hand side.
This wash-house and row of cottages predate the Lutyens extension to Penheale Manor
(qv).
