Disused cottage 10 metres to south
4/103 east of Kenningstock Farmhouse
II

Small cottage and barn, now disused. Cottage circa mid C17 extended with barn
probably in C18. Stone rubble, partly rebuilt with concrete block on left and rag
slate roof with gable ends. The barn which was added on the right hand gable end is
of stone rubble and has probably reused granite quoins and a rag slate roof with
hipped end. Projecting stone rubble stack on right hand gable end of house,
incorporated as axial stack when the barn was added.
Plan: small cottage, originally of 2 room plan; the larger right hand room heated by
an end stack with cloam oven. The smaller room on left was unheated. In circa C18
an unheated extension of 1 room plan and separate entrance was added on the right
hand gable end of the house, the extension probably a shippon or stable possibly
originally with a hay loft above.
Exterior : 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1 window front with granite lintels to openings.
House has wall rebuilt on left, plank door near centre and C19 2-light casement to
right. Window opening above, the fenestration largely decayed. The barn to right
has a door opening on left with a granite lintel.
Interior : Cottage has C19 ceiling beams. Fireplace with chamfered possibly reduced
timber lintel and cloam oven. Blocked fireplace on first floor. Roof : 4 bay roof
structure partly replaced in C18; circa mid C17 truss on left has principals which
have been halved notched and lap-jointed at the apex with halving for collar
(removed) which appears to have had a curved dovetailed lap-joint. The second and
third trusses are halved, lapped and pegged at the apices with renewed collars. Butt
purlins to second and third truss and slighty trenched purlins to first.
