Pair of shops with residential flats above. c.1900, altered. Terracotta on brick, with roof of slate and some copper cladding. U-shaped plan composed of a single and a double unit separated by a through-passage, with rear wings to both parts. Two and a half storeys, in Baroque style above ground floor; the shop fronts are both double fronted, and the windows and doors are framed by very slender columns but No.9 is narrower and they differ in detail: in No.9 the columns are free-standing and have fluted shafts and foliated caps, while at No.10 the columns are integral and have carved caps and carved brackets above; No.9 has a very deep fascia arched over a modern semi-circular canopy to the door, and a prominent sun-blind cornice, and No.10 has a modern sloped fascia board covering the top. Between the shops, the entrance to the passage has a terracotta surround with brattished cornice and blind two- light mullioned overlight. The upper floors are of three wide bays (the first hinged round the left corner) and of elaborate design in red and yellow terracotta, with panelled pilasters between, decorated bands above and below, and a prominent moulded cornice carried round. The left corner is formed by a hinged three-light window with cylindrical glazing to the centre light, and above the cornice an octagonal lantern with ogival copper-clad cap surmounted by an elaborate finial. The second and third bays each have a large semi-circular tripartite window with keystone, the cornice above this decorated with a small swan-neck pediment, and in the attic storey a two- light dormer with cornice and pediment. All the windows have recessed glazing and moulded surrounds.
