4/234 Carvannel Farmhouse with
attached garden wall
and mounting block
1.12.51 II
Farmhouse. Early C18 or earlier, enlarged and altered. Uncoursed killas rubble
with some granite quoins, thatched roof, brick chimneys. T-plan formed by long
single-depth range with added outshut and rear wing. Two low storeys and 4
bays; central doorway with thin lintel; one window to the left, 2 to the right,
and 4 at 1st floor, of slightly variable size but all small and furnished with 2-
light horizontal-sliding sashes with glazing bars. At the extreme left end (outside
the attached garden wall) the masonry incorporates quoin stones which may be
the remains of the lower half of a former doorway (which would have made a
baffle entry beside the principal fireplace - see Interior below). Hipped roof with
gable chimneys. The features of the rear are not of special interest. Interior: at
the left gable wall is a very wide fireplace with a chamfered granite jamb to
the right (former massive lintel replaced with a steel beam); right-hand half of
house said to have been formerly used as cowhouse. The garden wall, attached to
the front wall near the left end and at the right-hand corner, enclosing an area
approx. 15 metres square, is of slurried uncoursed rubble, approx. 2 metres high,
but ramped up to the right-hand corner of the house, with ridged coping and a
gateway in line with the door; and attached to the outer side to the right of the
gate is a set of 4 mounting steps built of granite.
