Tolgus Tin Streaming Works
II
Tin streaming works. C19, various builds. Some uncoursed granite, but mostly
sheet walls on timber frames, partly rebuilt in concrete blocks, with corrugated
sheet roofs. A complex of small interlinked buildings under connected roofs. All
single storey but to various heights, some built into or beneath the bank above
the stream so that they appear to be below ground level. The exterior features
are of less interest than the internal plant: this includes a 12-head set of
Cornish stamps powered by an internal waterwheel (and working within the last 4
years); a wooden round-frame (apparently in working order); a ball-mill; and
numerous Holman flotation tables. The plant was used for recovery of tin from
waste ore. A rare survival of such plant in so complete a form, some of it of a
type which antedates steam power (e.g. the water powered stamps).
