House. C18 or earlier. Timber framed and plastered, and red brick in Flemish
bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Main range facing S, with 2 rear
stacks, and rear wing at left end and one axial stack, forming an L-plan.
2-storey extension with imitation framing and hipped roof in right rear angle.
C20 small single-storey extension with hipped roof in front of right end, and
another to the right. Main range of 2 storeys with attics, rear wing of one
storey with attics. 5-window range of C18 sashes of 12 lights, with some crown
glass. 3 casements in hipped dormers. Central 6-panel door, overlight in 4
panes, moulded doorcase, flat canopy on scrolled brackets. Facade of red brick,
with flat arches of gauged dark red brick. Band of dark red brick above
first-floor windows, with projecting course and egg-and-dart cornice. Parapet
with stone coping. The returns of the main range are of red brick to the height
of the first-floor window arches, plastered timber framing above. The roof of
the main range only is half-hipped. Access to interior refused, June 1985. The
rear wing may be of earlier origin than the main range. This building falls on
the boundary between Tolleshunt Major and Goldhanger parishes, with main access
from the former.
