2 Farmhouses, formerly manor house. C15 core, C16 and C17 alterations, some circa
C19 remodelling, recent C20 alterations. Left hand (West) slatestone rubble range
with polyphant and granite quoins, slatestone rubble and freestone lateral stack,
slate roof hipped at each end. East pebbledashed stone range with gable ended
slate roof, brick axial stack. Complex plan. South end of west stone range shows
evidence of original open hall plan, present plan 2 rooms with through passage
leading into rear left outshut. Front right projects with an additional outshut
under catslide roof, granite quoins to projection. Lateral stack now enclosed by
front right outshut. Possibly earlier 8 bay pebbledashed range projects from rear
forming approximate T plan. Pebbledashed stone range also shows evidence of
original open hall plan. Wing with hipped slate roof projects south from
pebbledashed stone range at east end. West range has 2 storey, 3 window front,
third window in right projection. Change in roof line suggests rebuilding to left
of through passage, entered through porch formed from 2 large slates. Ground floor
window left 3-light casement with glazing bars, ground floor window right, in
projection, 2-light casement with glazing bars. First floor window left, 3-light
casement with glazing bars; window above porch 2-light casement with glazing bars.
Ground floor room right has partially blocked fireplace, chamfered granite jambs,
and blocked newell stair to right of stack entered through chamfered, 4-centred
arched wooden doorway: Stair has oak treads and is lit by rectangular stone light.
Cross beam has large step stops. cross passage has timber walls of horizontal
planks with painted graining. Principals visible in rooms above hall have
chamfered arch braces. 4 probably smoke blackened trusses visible in roof space,
chamfered arch brace and collar with trenched purlins, one truss with yoke. South
front of pebbledashed stone range 2 storey, 3 windows, with off-centre C20 doorway.
Ground floor windows renewed, 2 first floor windows under raking roofs projecting
slightly above eavesline. Axial stack had 2 flues, 1 now blocked, 1 partially
blocked. Principals upstairs boxed in but possible crucks. Wing projecting from
pebbledashed stone range is open to the roof, was ceiled, principals with curved
feet. Remains of cobbled yard to west of stone range. Froxton is a Domesday
manor. It was the property of the Giffords in the late C14 and passed to the
families of Downe, Roose and Spoure. The house is illustrated in the S oure Book,
1698, which clearly shows the extant buildings as part of a courtyard plan, 2
ranges now missing (copy in Cornwall Record Office. F.S. 3/93).
