House. Probably early C17 or earlier. Granite and local stone rubble. Slate roof
with gable ends and lower roof over range on right. Moulded C17 granite stack on
left hand gable end and stone rubble axial stack with moulded C17 granite shaft
between 2 storey range on left and single storey range on right.
Plan: Original plan is uncertain and this house is probably the remains of a larger
house. The ground slopes down to the right. 2 room and through passage plan with
higher left hand room heated by an end stack and lower room on right heated by an
axial stack backing onto the passage. The lower end is single storeyed and has been
partly rebuilt; however a first floor blocked doorway and at least 2 lines of
weathering on the right hand gable end of the 2-storey higher end on left suggests
that the lower end was once of 2 storeys. The left hand 2 storey range has a stair
projection for a timber newel stair (replaced possibly in C19 with wooden treads)
on the front towards the lower side near the front entrance of the through passage.
The roof structure above both ranges has been replaced in the C19 and C20.
The original plan may have been that of a C17 2 room and through passage arrangement
with early C17 entrance and through passage in situ; the left hand hall heated by an
end stack and the right hand kitchen by an axial stack with cloam oven. Possible
service rooms were added on the lower right hand gable end, rebuilt in late C20.
Alternatively the house may possibly have been of 3 room plan, continuing to the
right with the large inner room on left heated by end stack with stair up to chamber
above; what is now the right hand kitchen, was originally the hall, heated by an
axial stack on the higher side and through passage and lower end originally on the
lower side of the right hand range, now demolished. This would mean however that the
early C17 entrance arch to the present through passage has been reset.
Exterior: House faces north west towards small mill (qv), although there is evidence
of an earlier track to the rear of the house suggesting that the house may have been
re-orientated, originally facing south east. Asymmetrical single window north west
front with 2 storey range on left and single storey range on right. To left, 2 light
casement on ground floor, rectangular stair projection lit by C20 1-light casement
and C20 stone rubble porch with resited and reset C14 freestone chamfered arch.
Early C17 4-centred chamfered granite arch to entrance with pyramid and stepped stops
and 3-light mullion window above, the mullions removed. To right, the single storey
range has been partly rebuilt with 2 straight joints on front and C20 extensions to
right on site of earlier building.
Rear elevation with C19 entrance to through passage and 3-light casements on ground
and first floor of 2 storey range. The eaves appear to have been raised on the rear
and there is some evidence of the eaves having been raised also on the front.
However, this would predate the stair projection and C17 3-light mullion window on
front and may be the result of partial rebuilding or repointing.
Interior: Through passage with thick cross wall with axial stack on right hand side
of passage and partition on left hand side of passage removed. Ceiling beams above
passage replaced. Ceiling beams in left hand room of characteristic C17 wavy type
with chamfer and scroll stops. The ceiling beam closest to the newel of the stair
has an ornate jewel and straight cut stop. The fireplace appears to have been
altered in C19 or C20 with a deep narrow opening. Newel stair of deal with same
reused oak, in projection built partly on top of a large salting trough (locally
known as a kieve or trendle). Fireplace to first floor with granite jambs and
chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stop on left and ogee stop on right.
Circa early C17 or earlier oak doorframe from passage into right hand room, with
segmental arch and morticed jambs. Fireplace backing onto passage has chamfered
granite jambs and cloam oven. Partly blocked opening adjoining possibly originally
housing stair or smoking chamber.
