Farmhouse. Probably mid to late C17, altered internally in C19 and extended in late
C20. Granite rubble with dressed granite quoins, lintels and door and window frames.
Asbestos slate roof with gable ends. Gable end stacks with weathered dripcourses and
tapered caps, the right hand stack is much larger.
Plan: Double depth integral outshut plan. 2 principal front rooms, the larger
kitchen to the right heated from a gable end stack; the smaller room at the lower
left end is also heated from a gable end stack. At the rear 2 shallow unheated rooms
with a staircase between. The staircase was not inspected and the original may not
have been in that position. There was probably originally a cross passage between
the 2 front rooms but in the C20 the partitions were removed as well as the partition
between the left hand room and the shallow rear room to form one large room.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window range. First floor 3 early C19
16-pane sashes. Ground floor left 2-light horizontally sliding sash with glazing
bars; ground floor right 2 chamfered granite window frames with plate glass inserted.
Doorway to left of centre has chamfered granite 4-centred arch doorframe with
pyramidal stops.
At the back the integral outshut to the right has 3 small C20 plate glass windows and
to the left the large late C20 gable-ended wing has sash windows with glazing bars.
Interior: The partitions between the front room and between the front left hand room
and the room in the rear outshut have been removed to make one large room. Late C19
soft wood exposed joists. Large fireplace in the right hand room is made of reused
pieces of granite; the left hand end fireplace is C20.
Retallack was in the manor of Merthen.
