- outbuildings, front garden walls
and mounting block
II
Farmhouse. C16 or early C17 remodelled and extended in the C19. Painted rubble
walls with some granite dressings. Scantle slate roof sweeping lower at rear later
outshut. Brick chimney over the gable ends of the house (party wall with barn on the
left). Some stone corbels under the eaves.
Plan: Original plan probably a kitchen or service room on the left and a hall on
the right heated by front lateral stack. Remodelled following a fire circa 1830 to
provide a kitchen on left; an unheated service room right of an entrance hall and a
parlour on the right. Probably also in the C19, an outbuilding was added at the left
and an outshut was added behind the house to provide service rooms.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Farmhouse has irregular 4-window south front with original
doorway left of middle. Chamfered doorway has 4-centred arched head and pyramid
stops. Old 3-panel door with glazed vertical upper panels. C17 chamfered window
opening high over doorway has stooling for central mullion; now fitted with circa
early C19 8-pane horizontally sliding casements. Pair of similar 12-pane windows in
wide parlour window opening which retains original chamfered sill and similar 12-pane
window in C18 enlarged square opening over. Other windows are circa mid-C19 12-pane
hornless sashes in C18 or C19 remodelled openings. Window over small window right of
doorway is blocked.
Interior: Little altered since the C19 with carpentry and joinery details including
roof structure of that date. Roughly-hewn round-headed granite arch in front wall of
middle room is remodelling of original lateral chamfered fireplace. Rectangular.
garden in front of the house has single-storey farm building on its left-hand side;
rubble coped rubble wall on the right and granite coped rubble wall parallel to the
front of the house. Gateway leading to granite-flagged path has old wrought-iron gate
with scrolled decoration. Mounting block has 3 steps leading up from right-hand side
of gateway.
A copy of the Cornishman of 1879 refers to a fire at Trevavas approximately 50 years
earlier.
