Description

SW 62 SE GUNWALLOE

3/34 Gwills Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Circa late C18. Serpentine rubble walls with dressed granite quoins,
jambstones and lintels with wooden lintels over first floor windows. Asbestos slate
roof with brick chimneys over gable ends.
Double depth plan, 2 rooms wide with later kitchen added in C19 behind right-hand
room. Large front reception rooms flanking central passage leading to stair hall
partly behind left-hand room. Pantries behind left-hand room and right-hand room,
the right-hand one probably converted from the original kitchen in the C19 and has
passage at sides and rear.
2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window east south-east front. Central wide doorway with 4-
panel doorway approached by 2 granite steps, with 4-panel door with flush beads to
bottom panels and overlight. 2-light window over and 3-light windows in wide
openings to ground and first floor left and right. All windows are original
horizontal sliding sashes with 6 panes per light and much original glass. Rear is
also very unaltered since the C19:
Interior is little altered and retains most of its original carpentry and joinery
including open-well closed-string stair with rectangular balusters; 6-panel doors to
ground floor and 2-panel doors to first floor.
Attached within the jambs of the doorway at rear right into the courtyard are 2
similar carved and painted wooden male figures with smiling faces, said to have been
salvaged from a ship.
This is an unusually complete circa late C18 farmhouse unaltered since the C19 on all
sides and with all its original fenestration.
