3/119 Gate piers and Gates
- approximately 350 metres north-
west of Rockbeare Manor.
GV II*
Gate piers and gates. Gate posts are probably mid C18, the gates probably circa
1820. Stucco on stone rubble or brick with slated tops; wrought iron gates.
Large and ornate gate piers. Each face contains a rounded headed niche with
channelled rustication around and narrow band of vermiculated rustication along the
top. Flanking Doric columns also contain bands of vermiculated rustication and sit
on a plinth of channelled rustication and carry a moulded contablature with low
pediment above. The only difference on the rear is that the plinth is vermiculated.
The double gates are hung on wrought iron uprights with vase caps. The top rails of
the gates sweep down to create a continous curve between the two. The uprights are
relatively widely spaced and have simple spike finials. Between them short twisted
pieces descend from the top rail and rise from the plain double lockrail. Below the
lockrail double spacing of the uprights produces panels filled with simple geometric
patterns of iron work. This is the principal entrance to the grounds of Rockbeare
Manor. The gate piers and gates were probably erected with the circa 1820
refurbishment of Rockbeare Manor (q.v.).
