GV II
A pair of houses. Early C19. White brick above a rusticated
stone basement; slate roof with paired bracketed eaves soffit.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and basement. 6 window range: sashes in
plain reveals with flat gauged arches and stone sills, 12-pane
to the 1st and ground storeys, 6-pane to the top storey. A
raised brick band at 1st storey sill level. 4 6-pane sash
windows to the basement with segmental-arched heads to the
surrounds. An entrance at each end is approached up a flight
of stone steps: recessed doors with 6 raised fielded panels
and rectangular fanlights in deep panelled reveals; surrounds
with engaged fluted columns and pediment with Doric frieze.
The steps have cast-iron railings with wreathed handrails and
shaped balusters, 2 on each side incorporating a foot-scraper.
An attached dwarf wall across the front with low cast-iron
railings; No.13 has ornate openwork panels between
arrow-headed balusters, No.14 has plainer replacements. A
small older rear range, shared between the 2 houses, has an
old plaintiled roof and stands on a foundation wall of rough
stone blocks.
INTERIOR: No.14, fully restored in 1989, has a good geometric
stair which rises the whole height of the house: wide treads
with bracketed open strings, plain wreathed handrail. The
original stick balusters were replaced during the restoration
by turned balusters. Internal panelled shutters to the ground
storey windows. No.13 not inspected.
