Farmhouse. C17, remodelled circa 1700. Dressed and coursed slatestone front and
slatestone rubble elsewhere. Scantle slate roof, hipped to main range with brick
chimneys over side walls and over gable to wing. L-shaped plan plus long single
storey range to west. 2 room double depth, central stair plan since remodelling, but
possibly originally U-shaped with wide through passage. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5
window south front probably rebuilt circa 1700. Central doorway within hipped roofed
closed porch with side entrance to left and HL hinges to C20 planked door. All
windows in original openings, 12-pane sashes to right of porch and 24-pane sashes to
left and to first floor. 3 original sashes with heavy ovolo-moulded glazing bars to
first floor middle and right. Much old glass remains. Flat arches to openings and
robust moulded eaves cornice. Rear roof sweeps down to lower eaves interrupted by
raised hipped roof over stairs with tall margin glazed sash. Abutting this to left a
flat roofed stone-checked dormer with C18 or C19 2 casement window of 6 panes each.
C17 3-light ovolo-moulded, unglazed oak mullioned window with diagonally set wooden
bars survives to ground floor room partly under stairs. Wide window openings to east
wall of north wing. 3-light C20 casement to ground floor and 16-pane hornless sash
with sidelights over. Long cob range to west, probably C17 or C18 was thatched
originally. Interior has some C17 evidence including 2-panelled door with wide stiles
and rails to north wing; wide passage beside stairs and lower ceiling to upper end
ground floor room. Much survives from circa 1700; dogleg stair with turned balusters
over closed string; shell headed cupboards to east room (i.e. parlour); fine plaster
ceiling with bolection moulded oval design to parlour; 3 canopied ceilings with
moulded cornices to first floor; moulded cornice to vestibule and 2-panelled doors to
most rooms. Hearth in west range with bread oven retains adjustable iron chimney
crane. Included in the listing is the high slatestone rubble garden wall partly
within the lean-to adjoining the east end of the house together with a slatestone
rubble mounting block. Also included is a fine pair of brick gate piers probably
dating from around 1700. They have rebated corners, square plinths with freestone
mouldings and freestone cornice and cap stones. The present wooden gate is of simple
C19 design.
