ST MELLION NEWTON FERRERS
SX 36 NW
7/263 Garden walls to the east, north and
west of Newton Ferrers House, old
entrance on the east and arch on
the west
GV II
Garden wall, with reset gatepiers which originally formed old entrance to house on
east and arch forming entrance to garden on the west. Gatepiers and arch circa late
C17. Garden walls circa late C17, partly rebuilt in 1970s on east. Gatepiers
granite ashlar. Prior to 1950 the piers were square in section. They had a moulded
plinth with ornamented shafts surmounted by ionic volutes, a square abacus, curved
neck and ball finials. The shafts had 2 incised.moulded panels with dovetailed band
and heraldic arms above. The left-hand pier with the Coryton arms; 'argent a saltire
sable ' and right-hand pier with those of the de Ferrers 'a chevron between three
escallops'. The piers have now been broken up and re-arranged with the upper part of
the incised moulded panels and dovetailed band used as capitals to the western
elevation and the 2 heraldic shields as capitals on the east. The entrance has been
completely blocked up and the piers re-orientated so that the shafts are undecorated.
A datestone '1695' taken from the west range of the house, damaged by fire in 1940,
has been reset in the stone rubble wall between the piers on the east.
The stone rubble garden wall continues to the east, north and west of the house,
enclosing a topiary garden, partly remodelled. On the west a segmental chamfered
granite arch, possibly reset, in the stone rubble wall.
For illustration of gatepiers prior to remodelling see 'Newton Ferrers, Cornwall, the
seat of Mr Digby Collins'. Country Life Jan. 9, 1904, 56.
