House. Mid C17, with alterations of late C17/early C18; altered as 2 cottages
probably in early C19, some C20 alterations. Mixed slatestone and sandstone rubble,
partly rendered. Slate roof, C20 brick gable end stack to left and, rubble rear
lateral stack to hall and rendered rear lateral stack to lower end to right.
3-room and through passage plan, with lower end to right, formerly at lower ground
level, heated by rear lateral stack. Hall and inner room to left, hall heated by
rear lateral stack and inner room by gable end stack. There was a stair to the rear
right of the inner room; when the house was altered as 2 units, the rear door of the
through passage was blocked and a stair inserted to the rear of the passage.
Probably in the late C17/early C18, outshuts were built to the rear of the hall and
inner room and to the rear of the lower end stack.
2-storeys, ground floor has 3-light casement with timber lintel to left, 4-light
casement with timber lintel lighting hall, C20 door with pitched slate hood and 4-
light casement with timber lintel to right. At first floor, 4 small gables, each
with 3-light casement; 2nd bay from each end has a raking dormer with 2-light
casement. Slate string course over lintels of ground floor windows at upper end to
left. Left gable end has external rubble stack with brick chimney, glazed door to
right and straight joint to rear outshut. Doors and windows of C20.
Right end rendered, with hipped roof. Rear has single storey outshut to rear of hall
and inner room with door and 2 C20 windows. The hall stack is in rubble with string
course and shaped top, 2nd outshut built to rear of stack, also single storey; gabled
dormer to right of stack with C20 2-light casement. Lower end has external stack,
rendered, with shaped top, to right a small lean-to and C20 2-light casement, gabled
dormer with C20 window.
Interior Curved recess in rear wall of inner room, the site of the original stair.
Replaced ceiling beams of C20. Hall has granite fireplace to rear lateral stack,
with flat head, chamfered lintel and jambs, cloam oven to rear left with clay door
with handle. The lower end fireplace has oven recess remaining. Roof partially
visible, principal rafters boxed in at first floor level. The principals are crossed
at the apex, with diagonal-set ridge purlin, one row of purlins morticed to the outer
side of the principals; lower row of purlins also boxed in.
Said to have been used as almshouses.
