9/29 Range of garden walls attached
to north of Retainers' Court
GV II
Range of garden walls. Possibly C16 in the west range, extended in the C18 and
repaired C20. Slatestone rubble with granite dressings.
Plan: The first range extends about 60 metres to north ; there is a range about 60
metres long to west with a gardener's shed attached on the north side and a range
extending about 100 metres to west, probably extended circa C18, and returned along
the east side of the garden surrounding the house.
The first range is in slatestone rubble, about 2 metres high, with a gateway to south
with C19 granite surround with segmental arch. Towards the middle of this range is
another gateway in granite with segmental arch ; at the north end, there is slate
coping over a granite doorway with segmental arch and C20 Chinese Chippendale style
door. The range extending to west has a lean-to gardener's shed attached to the
north side. Extending to east, the wall has slatestone battlements, continued in
part of the south return.
