Country House (now used as adult training centre). Late C.19.
Rock-faced sandstone in narrow courses; ashlar dressings; hipped
clay patent-tile roof; 4 stacks. French Renaissance style. 2
storeys. Eaves cornice with scrolled acanthus leaf modillions.
String band at first floor sill level. Central projecting
single-storey entrance porch with paired Doric pilasters and
double 3- panelled doors. Above, on first floor, is a sculptured
achievement of arms (J.G. Swan) within a rectangular panel
flanked by scrolls on brackets and surmounted by a curved
pediment. One window to each floor, either side of porch;
sashes, paired on first floor, and with quoin surrounds standing
proud. Broad angle-turrets to each end, with pyramidal roofs and
wrought iron finials. L.H.S. turret is circular with paired and
single sashes. R.H.S. turret is square with rectangular bay
window surmounted by first floor bow with heavily moulded
cornice.
Interior: Tuscan hall screen; bifurcated staircase with arched
corridors to first floor and raised rectangular lantern above
coving. Fully oak-panelled and fitted Library with carved
classical mouldings, architraves and overmantel panel. Other
principal rooms have parquet flooring, elaborately carved
classical architraves, cornices and ceiling mouldings.
Fireplaces and large ornamental overmantel panels, in mixed
materials (including limestone and marble) all with classical
motifs.
Listing includes plain sandstone gatepiers, with ball finials, to
yard adjoining N. elevation. Also adjoined to N. elevation: a
single-storey service wing, and laundry, contemporary with Upsall
Hall and in same materials and manner.
