Town house. C18 extensively altered in C19. Flemish bond brick with slate roof.
Horsemarket Street frontage is a row of late C19 shops with 2 upper stories and
was built on to the original C18 frontage. The building is listed because of the
survival of the C18 rear elevation. This comprises a 6 bay, 3-storey facade with
a central 2-storey bay breaking forward fenestrated on the 2nd storey by a stone-
mullioned, Venetian window with Doric entablature and glazed with C19 sheet glass.
In the canted angle between the projecting bay and the main elevation is an C18
stone doorcase, possibly moved to its present location during the C19 alterations.
The entrance is an open-pedimented round-headed door case with Doric, fluted necking to
the jambs, the segmented fan-light and door itself both replaced. Immediately ad-
jacent to the projecting bay is an octagonal 2-storey wing extensively altered at
ground level and partly rebuilt above but retaining its original stone sills and
12-pane sash windows to the 2nd storey. Of the original main 3-storey elevation
to which these two features are attached (the forward bay and octagon), only the
12-pane sashes to the 2nd storey and the 9-pane sashes to the 3rd survive in bays
1 and 2. The ground floor is much altered and the attached C20 toilet block is of
no special architectural or historic interest. The dentilled consoles to the eaves
extend the full length of the rear roof line. Interior not inspected.
