Description

SJ 97 NW ADLINGTON C.P. HOLEHOUSE LANE
(South Side)

6/7 Milestone on towpath 30m
south of canal bridge
no. 25.

GV II

Milestone: C1830. Heavy rectangular sandstone block with a shaped
top reads "From ....... 7 Miles" on south face, and "From .......
19 1/4 Miles" in good seriffed script. The placenames of Marple and
Hall Green (the ends of the canal) were deliberately erased during the
Second World War to confuse German parachutists.
This is an example of the style of milestone on this canal with
simpler distance stones between. There is an example of such a stone
south of canal bridge no. 19 Adlington.
