Hotel, 1615 extended C18, C19 and late C20. Oak frame with painted
brick nogging; graded stone slate roof; brick walled wing left. 2
storeys plus blank attics. C18 left wing of 3 windows has 6-panel
door (lower panels flush) in pediment porch on brackets, with blocked
window opening above; two 16-pane flush casements to each storey,
left; left gable-end has 2 blocked window openings to each storey and
2 semi-circular blocked openings to attic. Part of left bay of
oak-framed portion rebuilt, superficially in keeping but with false
framing. 4 early Cl7 bays have close studding on sandstone plinth
with rail a little below first floor but no rail at 1st floor;
intermediate rail in upper storey; the left bay has door of 6 fielded
panels under added leanto porch with blank jettied gable above; 2nd
bay has canted Georgian bay window; 3rd bay is 2-storey jettied porch
with decorative panels inscribed 1615:WM; 4th bay has jettied gable
end with blocked lower window, oriel on consoles to upper storey and
herringbone struts to gable. C19 blue brick diagonal-flue ridge
chimney. An attractive informal ensemble.
Interior: 4 ovolo beams spanning front to back and 2 spanning side to
side in right room. Posts of large section. Beams are on consoles of
oak. The private upper rooms are stated to have similar beams and
posts.
