4/8 Clays Farm Bridge.

Accommodation bridge for Clays Farm over the Chester to Nantwich
length of the Shropshire Union Canal, circa. 1779 probably by J Clowes
Engineer (or Thomas Telford during the 1797 restorations). Red brick
with stone copings. Projecting carriage arch one brick deep. Steeply
humped and of only one vehicle width but with wide curved parapets to
both approaches. On the south side of the bridge there is a narrow
tunnel running west to east through the abutments: this is
semicircular arched with an inverted arch base and finishes just short
of the east side of the bridge, where there are four ventilation
holes. The tunnel is a store for timbers used for canal drainage and
repair work. The west parapet coping is of rectangular section
whereas the coping on the east parapet is semicircular; both have
metal cramps and appear to be original.
