The Village Well

GV
The Village Well, circa 1800 with earlier origins and later alterations. A red
sandstone cave-like chamber set into a wall at Lower Lane Carriageway level. The
well has a flat stone threshold slab and the chamber is now fronted by a door for
protection, for it was last used in 1940. Due to the slope of Lower Lane the well
chamber is below the level of the village green and Eaton Road. It is east of the
village stocks and smithy in a central village position.
