Vale Royal Locks

Lock Keeper's Cottage. c.1850 moved to its present site c.1890. Red
sandstone ashlar with slate roof. Two storeys. River front. Central
projecting porch wing with ground floor door having 4-centred arch and
hood mould. Band between floors continuing around building. First
floor cross window with chamfered mullion and transom. Delamere coat
of arms to gable. Lateral cross windows to recessed bays at right and
left and to both floors. The ground floor windows having hood moulds.
The right and left hand returns have canted bay windows which probably
date from c.1890 and there is an addition to the back of the house
which probably also dates from this time. The house was moved c.20
yards northwards at the time of the digging of the new large lock
(q.v.).
