Estate House 1894 by Douglas and Fordham for the 1st Duke of
Westminster. Red Brick lower storey on projecting sandstone plinth;
jettied half timbered upper storey; red tile gabled roofs; 2 chimneys
with blue diapering and moulded brick spiral flues. Two storeys of 3
bays with a single storey gabled brick loggia on two shaped oak posts
at north end (right, from river). Stone-dressed mullioned 2,3 and 4
light windows with ogee heads to lower storey; ogee headed
oak-mullioned to upper storey, with two 4-light oriels surmounted by
jettied gables containing small windows to attic. Heavily carved
gable beams; openwork oak bargeboards with ornate finials.
Rectangular leaded glazing with shaped panes at head of each light.
Oak boarded doors (with ornate wrought iron hinges and handles) in
stone-dressed openings.
Interior: dog-leg staircase with shaped newels and moulded flat
balusters; 6-panel doors with moulded stiles, muntins and rails and
vertical mouldings at centres of panels.
Of c1600 inspiration: picturesquely grouped with river and Iron Bridge
(q.v.).
