Description

CARDINHAM
SX 17 SW
2/22 Praze Farmhouse
-
II

Farmhouse. Probably early C17, with additions of C18 and alterations of C20.
Slatestone and granite rubble. Bitumenised slate roof with ridge tiles and gable
ends. One gable end stack with brick shaft remaining to right.
Plan: 3-room and through passage plan ; the lower end room to right, heated from a
gable end stack to right. The passage is a through passage, the rear doorway
concealed within a later outshut. The room to left of the passage may have been an
unheated central room ; there does not appear to have been an axial or rear later
stack. The higher end room has been substantially rebuilt, and the stack removed,
probably originally at the gable end. In circa C18, a single storey outshut was
added to the rear, behind the hall, passage and lower end room, with a stack at the
left side. Probably in circa C19, the hall was partitioned to form a rear lateral
corridor. Position of the stair unclear. Higher end room in course of rebuilding at
time of survey (March 1987).
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front. Ground floor has C20 porch in
front of the passage doorway, with outer C20 door, inner C19 panelled and glazed door
with overlight ; C20 2-light casement above. The lower end to right has C19 16-pane
sash with granite lintel at ground floor, 4-pane light above. The hall has 3-light
granite window with chamfered mullions, C20 3-light casement above. The higher end
has wide 2-light chamfered granite window with chamfered mullion, each light with a
C20 2-light casement inserted C20 3-light casement above. Right end blind, with
corrugated iron lean-to. Left end rebuilt with buttress in C20, C20 window at first
floor to right. At the rear, the outshut has stable door and 2 C20 2-light
casements. At the lower end is a C20 window at ground floor and C19 16-pane sash at
first floor. The higher end has small granite window with chamfered mullion at first
floor, C20 casement inserted.
Interior: Not accessible.
