Mine captain's house at South Devon Mine, now house, and freestanding mine chimney.
Mid-late C19, with few later alterations. The house in slatestone and granite
rubble, with brick dressings. Slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends ; gable end
stacks. Chimney in slatestone rubble with brick cornice.
Plan: House of double depth plan, with principal room to front left and right, each
heated from a gabled end stack ; shallow rear service rooms. Later in the C19, an
addition of one-room plan was made to the right end ; this has been rebuilt in late
C20. The chimney is about 30 metres to east, and is of circular plan.
Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical 3-window front, all windows are C19 16-pane sashes
with cambered brick arches and brick jambs. Central 4-panelled door with overlight.
Lower one-storey and loft addition to right has two 16-pane sashes at ground floor
and 2 raking dormers, each with 2-light casement. The right end has 2 C20 doors at
ground floor and two 2-light casements at first floor. The left end has C20 garage
attached ; first floor has 12-pane sash with brick surround to right. Rear has
randomly arranged C20 windows.
The chimney is circular, tapered, with inspection hole at the base. Brick cornice.
