Hall now farmhouse. Mid C16 with additions dated and inscribed J.C. J.C. 1576
on recorded lintel (now not visible); early C19 and C20 fenestration. Mixed
limestone rubble, partly roughcast, with eaves cornice under graduated
greenslate roof with C19 red sandstone ashlar chimney stacks. Oldest part to
left has extremely thick walls. Originally 3 storeys, but only the ground floor
is occupied, with a large loft above (owner suggests a C19 fire in this area may
have destroyed the floors above); right-angled extension of 3 storeys with
attic, 2 bays and projecting staircase bay to right, all of similar roof line,
in L-shape. Original house has blocked chamfered-surround entrance and ground
floor chamfered-surround window to left. Blocked C19 upper windows under
hoodmoulds. End wall left has later buttresses. C20 door and window in C20
openings. Rear wall has C16 3-light stone-mullioned window with rounded heads,
partly blocked by outbuildings. Upper floor C19 sash windows under hoodmoulds.
Extension has 6-panel door under radial fanlight in pilastered pedimented
doorcase. Sash windows with glazing bars, those on ground floor double;
hoodmoulds on upper floor. Blocked 2-light stone-mullioned windows and similar
blocked windows in stair projection. Rear wall has C19 sash windows under
hoodmoulds. Interior of oldest part has blocked spiral stair beside blocked
doorway. Large segmental stone chamfered fire arch. Corbel stones support
beamed ceiling. Extension has similar stone fireplace. Stair projection has
spiral staircase removed. Broad late C17 oak staircase with turned balusters
and broad moulded handrail, continuing up to attic. C16 house of the Porter
family who owned the nearby Weary Hall Colliery. Sold to the Drury family
c1710. See Transactions Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological
Society, new series, xiv, pp86-101.
