Farmhouse. Circa early-mid C17; remodelled circa 1700, with alterations and
additions of C19 and few later alterations. Painted slatestone rubble; partly
rendered. Hipped slate roof with ridge tiles. Stacks to right and left ends and
axial stack with brick shafts. The rear addition and the scullery have slurried
scantle slate roofs with ridge tiles.
Plan: 3-room plan, possibly originally with a through passage. The lower end room
is to left, heated from an end stack. The passage is to right, and the hall, heated
from an axial stack with the fireplace at the right side of the room. The upper end
room is to right, heated from an end stack. Circa 1700, a stair tower was added at
the rear of the passage. There are two later outshuts, to the rear of the hall and
to the rear of the upper end room; to the front of the upper end room there is a
single storey scullery/dairy addition. It is probable that the upper end room, to
right, is an addition, probably of the C18; the axial hall stack would originally
have been at the end of the house.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front with two further windows to right
in the upper end. The main range has late C19 gabled porch with 2-light casements
with round-arched lights; door at the right side. To left there is a C19 French
window and 4-pane sash. At first floor to left an C18 12-pane sash in exposed box
and three C19 4-pane sashes. There are paired sashes at ground floor to right. To
end right there is the single storey scullery/dairy, with scantle slate roof and
window opening on the inner side; the outer side has a brick stack, 4-pane sash and
C20 door. To end right there are two late C19 6-pane sashes at first floor and one
larger C19 6-pane sash at ground floor with cambered brick arches. Te left end is
rendered, with large external stack with C19 brick shaft with cornice. The right end
has C19 6-pane sash at first floor to right. At the rear, there is a C19 2-light 3-
pane casement at first floor to left. The stair tower has hipped roof with late C19
margin-glazed sash at ground floor and C29 2-light 3-pane casement at first floor.
To left there is an outshut of single storey with loft with 2-light casement at gound
floor and 4-light window with lapped glazing to the loft; C20 window to right. There
is a lower lean-to to left with C19 12-pane sash; the end room has C19 12-pane sash
with cambered brick arch at ground floor.
Interior: The main entrance leads to a passage with the stair tower at the rear;
there is a dog-leg stair, and the upper flight retains turned balusters and a moulded
handrail. There is an upper flight leading to the attic, with an early C18 3-
panelled door. The roof space has C19 trusses. At ground floor, there are stone
floors throughout and moulded ceiling beams, probably of C18. The hall has fireplace
with wooden lintel, cloam oven to right with domed stone interior; there are two
later inserted ovens in the fireplace. The scullery addition to front right had
trough and waterpump and and a boiling copper; slate floor. At first floor, the room
to front right has early C18 bolection-moulded chimneypiece with pulvinated frieze
and moulded mantel; C19 grate. 2-panelled doors at first floor.
