Church. C12, restored 1870-71 and again in 1882 dated on rainwater heads.
Squared and coursed red and calciferous sandstone (some from the nearby Roman
Wall); graduated greenslate roof with coped gables; sandstone slate on chancel.
3-bay nave with west open bellcote for 2 bells; and north porch. 2-bay chancel
with north organ chamber and vestry. C19 gabled stone porch; entrance to nave
has narrow Norman arch with column shafts and zigzag decoration, figurative
sculptured tympanum. C19 2-light panel tracery windows with hood moulds.
Chancel: 3-light east window, original Norman lancet in south wall, head of a
similar lancet has been rebuilt in north wall of organ chamber. Blocked south
door is Norman with tympanum of geometric design in different coloured stone in
3 horizontal bands. Interior has late C19 furnishings and fittings, C19
panelled wooden ceiling in nave. Norman chancel arch with zigzag decoration and
scallop capitals. Trefoil-head piscina with arched recess to right.
Roman sculptured and inscribed stone from the Roman Wall found during C19
restoration has been rebuilt into south wall. C19 barrel-vaulted timber roof in
chancel. East window stained glass of 1871 by Morris & Co., one other window of
1885 by E.R. Suffling. Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological
