Well head housing for artesian well, supplying water to Skelton Castle; late
C18. Sandstone ashlar walls and roof. Squat tower approximately 3m. high.
Chamfered rustication to 3 faces. West face has round-headed opening, now
blocked internally but retaining boarded door. Plain, .slightly-recessed
band has 3 paterae with beaded surrounds and bearing Latin inscriptions,
below square-domed roof. Rectangular plaque above doorway has inscribed
verse, probably by Lawrence Sterne: "Leap from thy mossy cavern'd bed
Hither thy prattling waters bring
Blandusia's Muse shall crown thy head
and make thee too a sacred spring."
