Lodge/Gatehouse 1881-2 by John Douglas for the 1st Marquis of
Westminster. Stone-dressed red brick with blue diapering to
gatehouse; banded stone lower storey and close-studded oak-framed
upper storey to lodge wing (right). Red tile roofs; shaped brick
chimneys. 3 storey spired gatehouse with corner tourelles, rib
vaulted carriage archway of two bays in E.E. style and carved armorial
panels of stone. Conical-roofed staircase turret. Mullioned windows
of stone and of oak to gatehouse and lodge all with patterned leaded
glazing in iron casements. Ornate wrought iron gates to main archway
and to lodge porch; ornate lamp brackets and lanterns. Arched framed
and boarded oak door to lodge. Stone-walls of yard and outbuildings
right of lodge form part of composition.
Interior: Oak spiral staircase through full height of building; oak
doors, mostly 6 panelled. Large upper room in tower with great
Tudor-style fireplace. A bravura gatehouse, impressive for its grand
scale, picturesque massing and rich detailing.
