Retaining wall, terrace and balustrade. C16 - C17, extended in C19. Rubble,
freestone. Heavily battered wall retaining artificial platform, rises about
6 metres, surmounted by wide moulded handrail on square balusters with moulded
plinths and recessed panels, strapwork in spandrels, heavier newels have similar
details and ball finials. Runs in front of house from south west corner and
returns at east 100 metres to orangery (q.v.). Balustrade is missing at south-
west and for about half of east terrace. The same form of wall is continued in
large C19 extension 30 metres westward, it then returns 100 metres northwards,
battered and of similar materials this wall has arrow slits and battlements. The
buildings supported by this wall are not included.
