3/21 The Grange

House, formerly rectory. Mid C18 origins, major extension and refacing c.1825,
further extension and alteration c.1860. Ashlar, slate and pantile roofs with
raised coped verges. 2 storeys, 5 windows, a picturesque irregular arrangement
of single and triple light windows under hood moulds, those on ground floor are
pointed french windows, some with gothick tracery, to left a single storey
canted bay with openwork parapet, similar bay to right is two storey, cornice,
plain parapet, 2 tier ashlar stacks at ends and off-centre right, recessed bay
at left has 2-light casement as main block above 6-panel door in plain frame.
Undistinguished rear elevation show pantiled earlier block which retains sashes
with voussoirs. Interior has fine dog leg cantilevered staircase with twisted
iron and brass balusters. Arthur Conan Doyle was a frequent guest in 1920s.
