House. Initialled and dated " RBE ". Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof.
1677
2 storeys. 2-cell plan with end-lobby entrance. Quoins. Dripcourse steps
over doorway to left end which has composite jambs and an ogee lintel with
chamfered surround, the lintel carved with 2 shields, one with date inscription
the other with coat of arms showing 3 corn sheaves divided by a chevron. Each
cell has a 3-light wooden-framed C20 window, mullioned originally, to each floor.
2nd cell has inserted C19 doorway with monolithic jambs. Coped gable with stack
to left gable, replaced C20 extruded brick stack to right gable. Rear has small
outshut to left end under cat-slide roof. This has window to each floor, 1st floor
rendered. Former 2-light double-chamfered mullioned window to rear of 1st cell
lacks mullion. Another small window above.
Interior: the doorway opens against the side of the gable fireplace. The outshut
provides a single room of uncertain purpose, perhaps to house a stair or a
garderobe or for storage.
The Hearth Tax returns for 1672 (Wakefield District Archives) list Robt. Bolland,
whose initials are likely to be those that appear above the front door.
