Barn. Late C16 or early C17 timber frame encased in stone probably early C18.
Hammer-dressed stone, stone slate roof. Single-aisled. 4 bays. Tall cart-entry
set in 1st bay has composite jambs and wooden lintel. Chamfered slit vent to
right (blocked). Set in 4th bay much weathered doorway with tie-stone jambs
and chamfered lintel to left of flight of 9 stone steps leading to 1st-floor
doorway with interrupted jambs and with 2-light window to left which has wooden
lintel, projecting sill and chamfered mullion. Rear has 3 former 3-light
windows with wooden lintels and mortices for wooden mullions.

Interior: Open arcade to first 3 bays. Posts on padstones have jowelled heads
and braces to arcade-plate and tie beams, some straight some curved. King-post
roof with single angle struts, curved braces to ridge. 4th bay has wall-tie
and close-studded partition retaining lath-and-plaster infill and separating of
floored mistal. On ground floor of right gable is ogee-shaped recess similar
to apex stones at Lumb Hall (q.v.). Chamber above mistal has window (blocked)
with stop-chamfered wooden lintel and mortices for 2 mullions, and 2 stop-
chamfered spine beams with mortices for ceiling joists now gone. The wall-plate
over the cart-entry has mortices for timber framing.

A fine barn with a good early timbered interior, rare in this region, and with
the unusual feature of a room over the mistal apparently for domestic purposes
and an original feature.
