Railway engine shed, now disused. Probably c1850 for the York and North
Midland Railway, altered. Ashlar gritstone dressings to coursed, squared
magnesian limestone walling; Welsh slate roof. 1 storey, 3 x 2 bays. North
side: plinth; impost band to 3 round-arched openings with raised keystones,
the central opening with boarded doors, those to each side blind below the
impost and boarded above. Left end of roof is hipped, right end gabled.
South side: horizontally-sliding doors on left, 2 lunettes above impost band
on right. Left return: 2 boarded round-arched openings, shadow of former
adjoining building between. Right return: 2 blocked round-arched openings;
remains of lunette arch in wall between; sockets below eaves at each corner
for mid-rail of canopy now removed. Situated on the Church Fenton to
Spofforth line opened 1847 and linked to Harrogate the following year. Built
to the same design as the engine shed at Thorp Arch Station (q.v.) which
retains its canopy.
