5/65 Carlton Hall Farmhouse
5th June 1964
II
Farmhouse, C16 with addition in Cl8, much altered. Timber frame, with later
cladding of stone now all rendered, slate roof. Now L-plan, the original
range of 3 units on a north-south axis, with added wing (of less interest) at
right angles to the northern hall of the front (east side) and added outshut
to the rear. Two storeys; the only eternal feature now of interest is an
external chimney stack to the rear of the lst unit, flow partly enclosed by a
lean-to.
Interior contains two frames of post-and-truss construction, with some
wallplates visible, wattle-and-daub panelling recently exposed but now
concealed and king-post trusses with curved longitudinal bracing to the ridge
secured by long pegs, and trenched purlins; original moulded plaster ceiling
decoration in the 1st bay at ground floor, including a ceiling boss with the
arms of Elizabeth flanked by the initials "E R" and surrounded by lettering:
"H0Nl : SOIT : QUI : MAL : Y : PENCE". (sic).
