to S.W. of Tower of Old

Grave slab on low stone plinth. Circa 1847. Stone slab in memory
of John Wraith d.1817, Mary Wraith d.1829, James Wraith aged 77, and
Anne Wraith, 2nd wife of above aged 65 all of Water Royd House. An
inscription follows: "The above aged couple with their servant girl
were murdered in their own house on 12th May 1847 about 10 o'clock at
noon by 2 Irishmen named Patrick Reid and Michael McCabe who travelled
the neighbourhood selling small wares. Reid was executed at York and
McCabe was transported for life for the above crime." Two further
members of the Wraith family are named.
