- Bridge
GV II
Overflow channel and culvert. c1798. For the Rochdale Canal Company. Coursed
squared stone. Overflow channel, on north side of canal, curves round to east,
joining with beck and directing water from this and the canal into a culvert which
runs beneath the canal and into the River Calder. The overflow channel has a stone
ledge at the canal side, and walls and base of squared stone. It steps down under
the segmental-arched culvert entrance. The culvert exit, on the riverside, has
a segmental arch with springers, large voussoirs, and large blocks above a band.
The culvert itself is composed of large blocks of stone. The overflow channel and
part of the culvert are in the parish of Hebden Royd. For history of canal
construction see Sowerby Long Bridge (12/177).
