Shops and shopping arcade with offices over. 1899 built for Turner and Fowlds
incorporating early C19 building. Ashlar with ashlar dressings and slate roofs with
10 stone stacks . 3 storey. Moulded bands, pilasters between bays with ornately
carved capitals, moulded eaves and parapet topped by ball finials. South, Low Street
front. 7 bays, with 3 bay earlier building to left. 6 shops with to the left an
arcade arch, then 2 further shops. Above central 2 storey curved bay window with
3 sashes, beyond to right a single further sash, all in shouldered surrounds. Beyond
to left over arcade a round arch with keystone, and panel inscribed ROYAL ARCADE.
Upper floor has similar fenestration pattern, with 3 windows over arcade entrance,
all with bracketted flat hoods. Parapet inscribed CROWN BUILDINGS. Central bay
topped by a gabled dormer with broken segmental pediment. Beyond to left a lower
early C19 building with a double and a single sash and above 3 casements. Topped by
a stone slate hipped roof. Corner to south-east has recessed entrance with door and
overlight, above a projecting canted bay window with 3 sashes to each floor. Topped
by an octagonal cupola with missing dome. East, Fleece Street front. 8 bays, with
from the right a flat headed carriage entrance, then a shop front and a recessed
entrance to offices, then 2 further shop. fronts and an arcade entrance, with beyond
a pair of shop fronts. Above the arcade entrance has a round arch with keystone,
and panel inscribed 'ROYAL ARCADE'. To the right 4 bays, the centre 2 with
3 windows and the outer 2 with 2 windows. To the left 3 bays, the first with
3 windows, the second with one window, and the third with 2 windows. All in
shouldered surrounds. Upper floor has similar fenestration pattern, with 3 windows
over the arcade arch, all with bracketted flat hoods. Windows are plain sashes
throughout. 2 storey L-plan shopping arcade, with east arm now blocked. Most
internal shop fronts survive, with balcony to east, and glazed roof. This building
also includes Nos 1, 3 and 9 Fleece Street.
