Description

BRIGHOUSE COLEY HALL LANE
SE 12 NW (north side)

1/64 Archway to Coley Hall
(formerly listed under Coley)
3.1.67
G.V. II*

Gateway, dated 1649. Broad moulded elliptical archway with moulded imposts,
joggled voussoirs, and scralled plinth surround by string in the form of a
frame. This lifts over the keystone and returns to form 2 shallow spandrels.
The keystone bears the date and a cross motif under a carved face, and the
spandrels are carved with dogs and the traces of other animals. Over all is a
raked cornice, with pierced tympanum and finials. L. Ambler, The Old Halls
and Manor Houses of Yorkshire, (London 1913), p.33.
