5/183 Wall attached to
south front of
The Cottage at
Old Harden Grange
GV II
2 walls, one set at junction of C18 building at The Cottage (q.v.)
forming enclosed courtyard with another set at right angles. Early
C18, and later C18 or early C19. Hammer-dressed stone, ashlar dressings.
Wall attached to The Cottage has semicircular-arched doorway with cyma-
moulded surround to left of recessed date stone inscribed :
" THIS MADE : WILL
I AM FARRAND AND
ELIZABETH HIS. WIFE . .
I III APRIL : 1584 ..." in raised lettering.
Coped wall.
Attached at right angles is open arcade formed by 4 pointed arches with
smaller arches set in the spandrels each surmounted by a stone cross.
William and Elizabeth Ferrand built Carlton Hall, Skipton in 1584,
therefore the date stone may have been brought at a later date from
Carlton and set in the garden wall.
