Butter Cross and base set within a square open-sided structure. Cross
and base of uncertain date but possibly C13 (market charter of 1212),
surrounding structure c1754 by Thomas Lister. Ashlar, stone slate roof.
Square base has 4 steps and base for tall shaft of cross which projects
through apex of roof. Square structure with square Doric corner columns
on stylobates supporting pyramidal roof. Re-erected on present site c1984;
see Old Market Hall (q.v.).
