(White's Directory 1917). By E. I. Hubbard (Rotherham Advertiser).
Sandstone ashlar facade, roof not visible. 2 storeys; 4 : 3 : 2 : 3 : 2 bays,
the 3-bay parts recessed and flanking an entrance feature. Thinly-applied
Ionic detail. Ground-floor string course. Main doorway has double doors and
stained-glass fanlight with panel of female artist holding palette; keyed
archivolt flanked by paired pilasters; date beneath frieze inscribed 'SCHOOL
OF SCIENCE AND ART'; shallow segmental pediment. Entrance entablature
continuous across elevation. Outer bays have pilasters at principal bay
divisions and recessed panels beneath shared sills of casements in architraves;
basement door beneath far right window; passageway flanked by pilasters to far
left. 1st floor: entrance feature has 2 tall casements in architraves beneath
recessed panels and flanked by pilasters; pediment surmounted by statue of
Queen Victoria sculpted by Gilmour of Sheffield (Rotherham Advertiser). All
other bays divided by pilasters and each with round-headed casement and keyed
archivolt linked by moulded impost band; narrower window to far left above
passageway. Plain frieze, cornice and coped parapet with dies at principal
bay divisions.
Interior: lobby screen with etched-glass panel bearing Rotherham arms and
words 'School of Science'.
