Lodge now house. Said to have been built c1775 for Thomas, 3rd Earl of Effingham.
Deeply-coursed, squared rubble sandstone, roof not visible. Small, square,
2-storey building with addition to north side. Large herringbone-tooled quoins.
Door near south corner has quoined surround and plain lintel. Window to each
floor with projecting sills and C20 casements in plain architraves, 1st-floor
windows taller. Embattled parapet with ashlar copings. Lower 2-storey addition
to north has monoclinal roof with embattled ridge. Effingham resigned his
commission when ordered to the American War of Independence; he spoke against the
war in the House of Lords in 1775. Commemorates the Americans' first encounter
with the British at Bunker's Hill near Boston in 1775 in which the British scored
