2/21 Broughton Mill
II
Mill, formerly a cornmill and currently inactive, late C18 with C19 additions
and enlargement. Rubble with stone slate roof. Four storeys. The east face
is divided by a straight joint near the centre which suggests that the northern
part is the older. This is in random rubble. The windows are 3-light recessed
square mullion windows, except to top storey which appears to date from the time
of the southern enlargement. The southern portion has more even rubble courses
and windows are square single lights. There is a semicircular arched cart entry.
The southern gable has a sundial inscribed "John Smith 1823" (the name of the
Broughton Estate mason) but the vermiculated surround to the bulls eye window
suggests a later date. Inside are massive beams and joists and bolted queen-post
trusses.
