Description

CONISTON COLD A65
SD 95 NW (south side)

3/41 Lowlands Farmhouse

10.9.54

GV II

House, c.1700 with later alterations. Rubble with stone slate roof and 4
chimneys. Two storeys and 4 windows, at present with a plain doorway near the
centre. Quoins separate the outer bays from the inner and a blocked chamfered
basket headed doorway stands just inside those to right, suggesting that this
was a 2-unit end-lobby-entry plan enlarged to each side. The ground floor
windows are all double chamfered of 3, 4, 3 and 3 lights; those outer bays may
be re-used from first floor, where all 4 windows are now sashes with all glazing
bars. The house was clearly raised in the late C18 or early C19, when the
original upper windows were probably re-used in the end bays.
