Hostel and dining hall. 1868 and 1875 by Austin and Paley. Gothic. Snecked stone,
Westmorland slate roof. Tripartite composition: 1868 central 3 storeys, 2 bay
entrance tower with recessed 2 storeys 6 bay wing to left. Left-hand projecting
gabled 3 storeys bay and right-hand recessed 2 storeys 5 bay wing with projecting
right-hand 3 storeys bay are additions of 1875. Entrance tower has left-hand
entrance with 4-centre head; moulded surround,plank doors. 4-light mullionedand
transomed ground floor window to right with King mullion. First floor 2-light
and 3-light mullioned and transomed windows. Second floor sill band. Two-2-light
windows with cinquefoil cusped heads. Embattled tower to left-hand bay with
gargoyles, gable to right with crocketted finial. Gabled end bays differ in treat-
ment. Left-hand bay is broader and contains entrance and canted bay window. First
floor 3- and 2-light mullioned and transomed windows. 4 lancets to second floor.
Right-hand bay two 2-light mullioned and transomed windows with Y tracery on ground
floor. 4-light mullioned and transomed window on first floor and 2-light window
with round-heads on second floor, crocketted finial. End bays are linked to centre
by 2-storey range of 6 and 5 bays respectively: 2-light windows. Dormers have round-
headed casements and projecting eaves with quartrefoils in gales. Left-hand, right-
hand and central stacks. Louvred vents to wings.
