- II
Memorial stone. Dated 1826. Sandstone ashlar. Slab approximately 1 metre
in height, 300mm in width and with rounded top. Inscribed on front face
"MAY 19, 1826 DO NO MURDER". The stone reputedly commemorates a local
farmer, who one day saw a local cattle dealer driving some beasts to Leyburn
Market and waylaid him on the way home, killing him for the money which the
animals had made. He was the last man to be hanged at York, and was buried
in an unconsecrated grave immediately outside the churchyard wall of
Finghall Church (qv).
